Wretched Radio

2008 November 17

Just received this letter from Ray Comfort in my facebook inbox today…

“Greetings in the name of our Lord,

Three years ago, it was our privilege to launch The Way of the Master Radio program. Today, I am writing to make you aware of an exciting new development. The Way of the Master Radio program will be replaced by a new program called “Wretched Radio,” and produced by an organization known as FamilyNet. The program will remain quite similar to the current one. Todd Friel will continue to serve as host, and Ray and Kirk will continue to make appearances. Most importantly, you will still have access to the new program through most of the same outlets, at the same times, everyday! We encourage you to continue to listen. Additionally, FamilyNet will be creating a new “Wretched Radio” website that will produce live streaming and podcasting. The change will take effect on Monday, December 1, 2008.

The Way of the Master Radio program has been a tremendous outreach for our ministry. However, after earnestly seeking the wisdom of the Lord, we believe the best course of action is to allow the program to transition to FamilyNet. Earlier this year, Todd Friel was named host of an original FamilyNet television program titled, “Wretched TV.” Adding “Wretched Radio,” with Todd serving as host, to the FamilyNet line up of programming is a natural fit. It will enable the program to reach more people around the world and thereby have a greater impact. We are truly delighted by this exciting prospect!
Thank you so much for having supported The Way of the Master Radio through faithfully listening to the program. Once again, we would like to encourage you to keep listening as the adventure continues with “Wretched Radio.”

God Bless You,

Ray Comfort

So then… you have signed up for Ray Comforts email news letter?

Or was this a personal communication directed specifically at you?

BTW, if you haven’t yet seen “Fire Proof” it is well worth the investment of time and money…. in my opinion.

  2. 2008 November 17

No, this isn’t a personal email.

I saw “Fireproof” a few weeks ago, it was a great movie. See http://john1139.wordpress.com/2008/09/28/fireproof-was-awesome/

    Thanks for visiting! :-)

It will be interesting to hear why they are making the change. I don’t think as at Tuesday 5pm GMT. They have added any comment to the email that Ray Comfort sent out to supporters yesterday.

I’m sure just as they do now, that they want as many people listening as possible!

I wonder what they’re reasoning is for the new monthly fee…

I think they are going to include a video podcast of Wretched TV, whcih I have never seen, since I don’t subscribe to the digital cable tier or a dish service. So, it might be worth 6 bucks for some of us. I really enjoy the radio podcast.

  14. 2008 November 21

That would be cool. Except for short clips from YouTube I’ve never seen the TV show either. I might have to take the plunge! I’ve been listening to the WOTM radio show for over 2 years now and I love every minute of it… it’s difficult to imagine not continuing to listen to it. :-)

  15. 2008 November 21

I’ve been listening for 2 years now, and went to one of the Transformed (which was free) events too. I don’t see myself paying $70 per year to listen though. I’m really going to miss listening to Todd each day, and having this as part of my daily spiritual food.

I am not into paying subscriptions to listen to podcasts but my 15 year old daughter and I listen to WOTM Radio podcasts everyday on the way to school, after school and all the other times we are in the car.

I will be glad to support one of the best podcasts for our spiritual growth and challange.

Listening to Todd, Ray, “Our little growing pain,” the Lawman, Trish and others motivates us to be proactive in witnessing.

    May God get the glory.

I only get to hear a few hours via podcast a month which I really enjoy and find helpful. Unfortunately, I don’t listen enough to justify 6 dollars a month. I also do not have a radio station to hear the broadcast live. Certainly listeners like me are going to be lost. I would think it is in the best interest of the program to be heard by as many people as possible and this move is going to greatly diminish that audience. I have given several people a copy of a podcast and now I won’t be able to do that either.

When his ministry reached the right number of followers, I’m sure the apostle Paul would have charged for Podcasts too.

I listen about 2 to 3 times a week myself and I thoroughly enjoy the podcast. I think that this podcast has been a tremendous blessing to the body of Christ but I do agree that they will lose some listeners with this new subscription.

I’m still on the fence as to whether or not I will pay the fee to continue listening.

    Very unfortunate… :(

I’m not on the fence – I won’t pay. Between WOTM Basic training, intermediate training, DVD’s, books, tracts, Transformed Conference, and Deeper Conference, I’ve already invested nearly two thousand dollars in this ministry. I’m not angry, but I am a little disappointed. No ministry that I know of has been successful in this type of subscription-based model. I was a daily listener – almost never missing a podcast – but I have to draw the line somewhere.

I just heard the podcast intro. to WOTM, and while Todd mentions a “membership” for $5.95 a month, he does not say that the podcast will not continue to be free.

Maybe somebody want to beep talk this question to him.

I LOVE Todd and WOTM radio. I plan to subscribe to listen to the podcasts, unless they stream it. Actually, either way I think I will pay the fee.

I personally am not crazy about the idea of someone asking for money to support a ministry, but I have heard Todd tell others to ask for money to start a ministry, so I suppose that in some way he thinks it’s justified. I don’t mean that as a critique whatsoever, but I find it unusual (at least in the Christian circles that I run in)

Nonetheless, I think they are asking because of the way that the economy is right now. I have heard ministries ask for support that I have never ever heard ask in the past. It’s really quite surprising.

Actually, I think if I don’t subscribe I will go into withdrawals. Other than church, I most listen to WOTM radio over I think just about anything else I listen to .

Sorry if all of that was rambling. I’m tired.

I think it is a terrible mistake to limit you audience. I supported the program it the past in hope that they would be able to reach a larger audience and continue to grow. Now they are headed the other way. It even appears that they may have “sold out”.

  33. 2008 December 1

I guess I didn’t look close enough, I think you guys are right that the “free” podcast only includes the “segment of the day” which is very unfortunate. That’s disappointing.

What do you mean when you say they may have sold out Jeffrey?

  34. 2008 December 2
    Valerie permalink

I’m not bothered by this at all. There are so many that say I listen to it all the time but I’m not willing to pay for it. Well…… someone has to pay for it. I mean really, these guys need to support their families as well as pay for all the production costs. If you look at it, there’s generally about 20 business days a month so you are talking about 40 hours of entertainment for 6 dollars.

How much do you pay for your Starbucks daily? Ticket to a 2 hour movie? Net Flicks subscription? Hmmmmm…..

Also, if anyone is interested, the website says that WOTM was going to drop the radio program until Family net decided to pick it up. So, there’s the real reason.

  35. 2008 December 3
    Jon permalink

It really doesn’t make much sense to cancel the free podcasts. Regardless of genre, the shows that move to paid subscriptions in the podcast world are basically shunned, and I doubt that they would be able to make much money even if they go through the effort of “selling out.” Plus, their target audience (or at least the ones who SHOULD be their target) are not avid Christians, and would therefore not pay for Sirius or the podcast.

I am sorry, but this act does give away their true feelings about “saving” the lost as opposed to yelling at them and feeling self-satisfied. There is no way that I would pay for this program, although luckily that means that my bizarre addiction to the show will be broken.

  36. 2008 December 4
    Elias permalink

Here is the bothersome part for me… The are giving you a free segment of the day for a podcast. Which means, the technology is in place and the efforts are being put forth to publish “some” of the show at no charge. This also means someone on staff is more than likely editing the mp3 to just include that portion. Why not just post the entire show? Is it a bandwidth issue or hard drive space? I have not listened to Wretched Radio in 2-3 days and although I miss the show, I am really disappointed that they have taken the “business approach” to selling this stuff. I hope Todd or the rest of the crew reads some of these posts. Parting ways with WOTM is one thing, but I believe the show is at risk of losing many listeners.

  37. 2008 December 4

I hear you Elias. I haven’t bought into it either and I really miss listening to it like I used to. I do agree that they will lose a lot of listeners and I’m sure they’ve taken that into consideration. Nevertheless, I think I might send Todd an email to alert him to some of the comments that have been made here because it seems like the majority of you guys are not in agreement with it. (including me) :(

It probably has to do with the fact that FamilyNet has the show now. I don’t know…

Just thought I’d let you know, I registered to see if it’s worth it to keep going. There is an RSS feed and it’s possible to get the full podcast off of iTunes. I think it just requires that you put in your member name and password. Once I get home and listen, I’ll maybe post again to let you all know what the show is like. For me, the show is well worth the $6 a month…and worth more than that if you ask me.

I take issue with the way it was presented. 4-6 months back WOTM came out and publicly asked for help supporting their ministry. It was done in a great spirit asking brothers and sisters to join with one another. Grace To You, Renewing your Mind, Albert Mohler (to name a few) all have free pod casting (and so did WOTM). I say that not to compare them, but to say that these other ministries have been well established and on the air for years. Needless to say, they have the support and resources to provide them at no charge.

I just wish the “pay for membership” was not just thrown on us like a business idea. I can completely understand if the radio program is new with Family Net and the funds\resources are not there to allow for a free pod cast at this time. If an email or broadcast had gone out asking for “help” to support these resources, I would have gladly given the $6 per month or more for that matter.

You walk a fine line when you start charging for ministry.

I contacted Wretched directly to ask about their subscription charge as well as listening to the pods in iTunes. Here is the reply I received (with permission to post).

    My Question was:
“I’m reading a lot of “guesses” on various blogs about why the monthly charge is now in effect. I’m guessing that, besides the failing economy, another reason for the monthly fee is due to partnering with FamilyNet? Perhaps they charge their content providers for bandwidth, services, facilities? Just trying to figure out why the charge because I’m reading a lot of buzz (negative) over it.”

    Answer was:
“The simple reason is that Living Waters decided they could not do the show anymore and FamilyNet said they would pick it up. Now FN is not a non prof, so we had to change how we are funded. We had to start becoming self sustaining.”

    My Question was:
If I join as a member to Wretched, will I be able to get the full podcasts in iTunes to listen on my iPod? Also, during the shows you featured Ray going fishing, Lawman, and Trish. Are they still involved like before or only infrequent guests? Chris

    Answer was:
“You will be able to use itunes, once you sign up there is a link to setup itunes to work.
Yes they are still involved, but it may scale back for Ray in the future.”

I can certainly understand the move towards a subscription service given the above info. Sounds legit and straightforward to me.

Maybe this is the Lord’s way of telling us to get off our duffs and out in the field proclaiming the Gospel to others.

  41. 2008 December 4

I am disheartened by the fact they have started charging for their podcast…..the TV shows posted will be at least 30 days old according to the website. If you read the Bible, Luke 18:22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

This will be a problem for “Wretched TV/Radio” They should just ask for donations. Seek corporate sponsorship………I just hope that Todd is not trying to get rich off the Gospel!!

  42. 2008 December 5

    Chris,

Thanks for the information. Seems pretty straight forward to me also. It’s good to know all that because it played a part in my decision to go ahead and get the subscription. Downloaded all of the podcasts from iTunes last night! We’ll see how it goes. :)

    JR,

Listening to Todd for a couple of years now, I really doubt that he is trying to get rich off the Gospel as you put it. His heart is for the lost and for exhorting the church at large. He’s always stood in the face of prosperity folks in the past and he will continue to do so I trust.

I believe what you are referring to is that if you are not a member the shows are at least 30 days old. According to the website, 3 more episodes were added today. If the 30 day rule were true for members, you wouldn’t be able to see those until next year.

I haven’t confirmed this, just going on what I’m seeing. I plan on joining today.

Has anyone looked at this from another angle? With “Obam-essiah” taking office very shortly there are about to be some huge legislative changes. I can’t remember the name of it but he wants to pass a law that requires equal time for opposite opinions. Maybe by switching from non profit to a pay for membership format, they will be able to get around this. This may be them trying to save the show.

This post will be a testy angry one.. so stop here if you want happy speak…

This has been a fine ministry. My son and I have listened to every day. Consider at as 1 of the most valuable but I have to pay rent and electric and car insurance . I don’t have cable . I broke down and splurged to purchase socks last week.. 1st time in 4 years.. I thank that there would be many ways to
continue with a membership. But call this a business now.. !

Your now marketing a product… ok fine.. Considering this catastrophic
financial melt down your timing as bad is it could be for me to scrape more money together for something that has been free for how long….

This ” membership has held me hostage ” looks like I have to let them go.. I am single Dad with not enough to make ends meet…

I sure that there are plenty of much better off listeners …

Thanks for your wonderful and insightful wisdom for this last year..

This is wrong I was a faithful listener and supporter for years – but $110 Australian dollars a year to get basically what was on offer before is excessive and it is wrong – I find this hard to accept as being in utmost good faith having heard them on previous occasions stride the moral high ground against the Rick Warrens of the evangelical world for their “consumerist” disposition towards their brothers and sisters in Christ.

I think it is also unprecedented – I see that even the charlatans (i.e. Copeland and Dollar et al) don’t charge for their false teachings on podcast and I am yet to find a bona fide Christian ministry that would do this.

WRETCHES – For goodness sake whilst there is still some goodwill left among your listeners, reinstate the podcast and don’t compel Gods people to pay for it – the ministry is too important…

I am really surprised by some of the negative comments expressed here. For those of you who think it’s such a disgrace that Wretched is asking us to pay for their content, when was the last time you complained about having to pay for a Piper or MacArthur book? I mean, if those guys are so sincere about spreading the Gospel and helping us grow in our faith, shouldn’t they just give away their books for free? Obviously not! It costs money to create and publish their materials, so we willingly pay our money if we think it’s worth it, right? So why isn’t the same standard applied to Wretched? It’s expensive to produce a quality TV/radio show. If you think it’s a valuable resourse, then put your money where you mouth is. If not, don’t. Besides, $6 a month is peanuts for what they give us! As I see it, they’re simply asking the body of Christ to support them financially so they can continue to do what they do best – equip us to share and defend our faith. Is that really asking so much??

  48. 2008 December 9

I am not hearing any chapters and verses people. Capitalism is not inherently wrong. I paid for sirius when I first heard this ministry, and I got saved. Sirius was benefiting from the Gospel financially just like familynet. WOTMR now has a niche audience. Just like if you were to go to learn the language of another culture and share the gospel with them. They are limiting their audience, and drawing support from them. Even though I got saved through WOTMR I always saw it as a ministry to equip the saints for evangelism. Paul was supported financially by christians. Now Christians will be the primary audience and they should support them financially, only through familynet rather than livingwaters. As far as I know they are still broadcasting a live stream free from their website. I do think they will lose influence, they will lose 90 percent of their podcast listeners. As a pragmatic move I would not have charged for podcasts.

I listened to the entire 2-hour show almost daily during the last 2 years. Had tears in my eyes many times during the witness encounters. Many a prayer has gone out for those being witnessed to. My wife and I would even go on trips and listen to the entire show. She was so in to the program, she wouldn’t even let the kids talk the whole time. Even though we know it’s a serious matter, my family still jokes sometimes how all liars will have their part in the lake of fire. :)

While this move to FamilyNet is disappointing, it was apparently the only alternative to avoid closing the program down. I agree with the others that charging a monthly fee will eliminate probably 90% of their listeners (myself included). Maybe when finances improve, I can subscribe to their podcast feed, but my current situation is such that I can’t afford to support the program. That’s sad, because I have grown so much by listening to their programs. They’ve had a profound impact in keeping my Christian walk pure and Spirit-filled.

I can’t help but feel sorry for those who have been relying on this program for spiritual and emotional support. They’ve equipped so many Christians to be courageous to witness and defend the faith. I’m especially concerned about the effect this will have on those who were listening that are weak Christians or people on the fence.

I will pray for Wretched Radio to continue to be around for years to come. Peace, and God bless.

  51. 2008 December 13

I have to say that they (Todd and Ray) have books and other materials forsale too……but to charge for the spreading of the Gospel is outrageous. And as far as the NT stating that Paul was supported….he was supported in basic needs….how much does Todd need to survive? I dont think its wrong for him to make money…..but to charge for the podcast is over the top.

I hope they can read this……..or find it somehow. I have seen Paul Washer in person in a small country Church in NE Georgia and he preached …….only for a “love offering”

Todd needs to rethink this……..Todd if you read this we are praying for you!!

It’s a radio show people! Do you not understand that it costs money to produce it and that there are many more people involved in show production other than Todd?? They lost their funding through Living Waters – do you expect them to fund the show themselves?? It’s expensive to produce quality shows like Wretched! Paul Washer is a preacher; Todd Friel is a radio/TV host. If
Washer were to have a daily radio show, he would also have to find a way to fund it. Sorry, people, that’s the way it is. A radio show doesn’t just appear out of thin air. Someone needs to pay the bills – why not the people who benefit from the show? Let’s consider it our “love offering” to ensure that quality Christian programming continues to be broadcast on the airwaves.

  53. 2008 December 18

I commented back on 11/21 that I was going to miss listening to the show. But since the changeover, I’ve still been listening daily, but listening to the live broadcast.
Before the change to Wretched, I listening to the podcast mostly while driving back and forth for work. That was a great time to listen, and if I missed something, just a quick rewind and I could listen again.
Now, I listen to it while sitting at work, and I’m constantly missing parts of the show, and I find that I don’t go back later and listen. So, even though it’s a little different, there’s not been a HUGE change for me, except maybe some of the convenience.
Now, it only appears that my listening style will need to change a little, but at least I still get to listen daily. If I miss the show, I can still catch it until the next show airs. There is one problem now. If I don’t listen to the previous show before the next one airs, I can’t listen at all. Still, not too big of a deal.
After reading down through some of the comments, I can agree with Elizabeth that this can’t be done for free, and that typically a “love offering” be used to support the show. However, this is not an offering, but a sales price. I should have asked for this as a Christmas present:)
Keep up the great work Todd – we’ll keep listening.

For a positive spin. If we don’t have the $ to listen, we will have more time to live our Witness. If we were sold out in sharing Christ-what might happen??? No reason not to start there and let God bless.

    Hi All,

I loved listening to WOTM radio. I would download the podcasts and was nearly 2-3 weeks behind because I couldn’t always catch up. I learned a lot and my faith has grown.

The friend who told me about the program has been an avid listener for years. He is a single Dad and also unable to afford the subscription. Due to the economy, his job situation has been affected and he is struggling to make his ends meet and they aren’t. He has spent a lot of money supporting the ministry, studyinig evangelism (Way of the Master has been a big part of his studies.), and spreading the Gospel. His obedience to what the Lord was directing him to do, has benefitted me personally. When Hell’s Best Kept Secret was shared with me, my life was changed. It was an answer to many years of prayer. My understanding of the Gospel and how to share my faith is something for which I am profoundly grateful.

Like many, I think that ministry should be free. However, I also understand that it costs money to publish and broadcast. Todd, Ray, Hip-Hop, Braniac, Trish, Lawman, Kirk, and all of the rest of the gang need the same practical things that we do. We all need shelter, food, clothing, medical care, etc. Evangelists and missionaries don’t usually live luxurious lives. A lot of ministries are suffering financially. They just have the money they had 1 or 2 years ago. Cuts have had to be made. They often live hand to mouth.

Personally, I think that we the listeners ought to be supporting them financially as we are able after supporting our own local churches first.

As for the daily show, I listen when I can since each days’ show is looped until the next days’ show is broadcast. I miss getting to listen every day. Right now, there are more immediate needs that I am spending my money on. I am helping those that are directly around me that are in dire need. After I have helped my local friends, I’ll probably pony up the money for an annual subscription so that I can resume the podcasts. For now, I am grateful for what bits of the daily show I can listen to for free…

If you ask me,the question should be”Why would you want to spend money on Todd Friel AT ALL!?!” WOTM/Wretched Radio is giving you christians a bad name. His ranting and scorn for anything that isn’t biblical or evangelical just makes atheists like myself stay hard and true to our anti-belief. Six bucks a month isn’t much but it’s about $5.75 too much,in my book. Intolerance toward other faiths, constant condemnation of alternative lifestyles and complete disdain for anything secular on a daily basis doesn’t earn one’s membership. And never mind the show’s unwillingness to take on any opposing viewpoints without spouting off some boring old scripture. Let’s face it:it he and evangelicals like him had his way, society would be blasted back to the 18th century. Why the hell do you people think Friel makes any sense!?!
We atheists listen to the show because it’s the radio equivilant of watching the crazy person on the corner wearing a sandwich board that has “Repent! The End Is Nigh!” on it. There’s no way he or his crackpot “ministry” is getting my money. It’s a racket, people.
Why not try putting down that book of fables(your bible) and try,oh,I dunno..thinking for yourself. trust me,you’ll be miles happier rather than living by what that book or some jerky radio host tells you how to live.

Mick, thanks for visiting. May God graciously open your eyes and change your heart…

You said, “His ranting and scorn for anything that isn’t biblical or evangelical just makes atheists like myself stay hard and true to our anti-belief.”

I say, Todd says what God’s Word says, that’s it. If you choose not to believe it there’s a more fundamental problem at work… Consider the following:

“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.” – (John 3:18-20 ESV)

You said, “Intolerance toward other faiths, constant condemnation of alternative lifestyles and complete disdain for anything secular on a daily basis doesn’t earn one’s membership.”

I say, Todd is not trying to earn memberships. His primary purpose is to share biblical truth with the world. This is what he has been called to do. The membership first and foremost is for the body of believers to support the ministry and keep it on the air. If atheists like you pay to join then praise God! Hopefully you will be transformed by the preaching of God’s Word. (Romans 10:17)
Also, Todd as well as other true Christians like myself do not condone other faiths/lifestyles because God has commanded us to love and serve Him only. (Exodus 20:3,4) And to be unspotted from the world… (James 1:27, 1 John 5:21)

You said, “Let’s face it: if he and evangelicals like him had his way, society would be blasted back to the 18th century. Why the hell do you people think Friel makes any sense!?!”

I say, “The Word of Christ is timeless and is meant to be adhered to in all cultures, in all generations… You can still be 21 century and not live a sinful life. We just love God above everything else and seek to please Him while living our lives through repentance and faith in Jesus. Doesn’t mean you have to dress and talk like a pilgrim.

You said, “We atheists listen to the show because it’s the radio equivilant of watching the crazy person on the corner wearing a sandwich board that has “Repent! The End Is Nigh!” on it. There’s no way he or his crackpot “ministry” is getting my money. It’s a racket, people.”

I say, “That’s fine, you really do not need to pay. God provides for His people and the ministries He calls them to. God is sovereign and doesn’t need your money. I think the reason you continue to listen is because somewhere in there you have a conscience and you don’t even have enough faith to believe there’s no God. You are scared of the possibility of going to hell when you die so you continue to listen. I pray that you would someday come to the knowledge of the Truth, repent of your sins and trust in Christ for salvation. Be reconciled to God while it is still day Mick.

You said, “Why not try putting down that book of fables(your bible) and try,oh,I dunno..thinking for yourself.”

I say, “This will get us to hell Mick. I love God and am thankful for what He has done for me, therefore I never want to put my Bible down. Never.

I wish you could know and feel the Love of God, it would melt your heart. Then you would believe. You would want to love Him back guaranteed. I pray that He sends His love to you so that you will experience it. I pray your bitterness, hurt and anger to be removed from you so that you can be at peace, and have joy. I pray that you see the awesomeness of God and it changes your heart forever. I pray that God fill you with love, forgive your sins and impute righteousness to you, heal you and make you whole. In the name of Jesus, Amen! (Let it be done!)
    Love, Nicole

Everyone complaining here acts like th show isn’t put out on actual radio stations. It maes sense that you would have to pay for the extra service of the podcast.

I’m so glad I subscribed. It’s well worth it. I’ve been listening two years now. I hesitated to have to start paying and put it off for a couple of months, but I’ve learned so much and been encouraged to study God’s word more by the program and missed it enough to finally give in. I’m sooo glad I did! I love the Witness Wednesdays. It’s my favorite part of the week.

I just came across your website, I opened it but did not go through it yet. The description about the website is pretty interesting, will take a look at my convenient time.
